  • Safety First

Gaining regulatory approval for cultivated meat has been notoriously challenging. Before cultivated meat can reach consumers in Europe, it must pass rigorous safety assessments and receive approval from policy makers.

The European Food Safety Agency, which food safety frameworks are the most stringent worldwide, evaluates production methods, ingredients, nutritional properties, and food safety standards.

Once safety has been proven, a novel food must receive approval from policy makers in Brussels.

Recently, European law makers decided to ban alternative proteins from using 31 meat-like terms, such as "sausage", creating significant new obstacles to public understanding and market reach.

Despite these barriers, navigating these strict frameworks is necessary to build public confidence, and the work continues to bring safe farm-grown meat to European plates.
